Traditionally, the ancient Hawaiian practice of ho’oponopono was used within family systems to clear conflict and to restore and maintain good relationships. If anything was out of alignment or there was discord, a mediator would be brought in to speak with whom ever was in conflict to 'set things right'.

Ho'oponopono can also refer to very practical things like setting things right in your business or house.

Prior to the influence of Christianity in Hawaii, it was also used as a practice to set things right with super-natural influences. The practice of ho’oponopono recognizes that when things are not ‘right’ in the ‘ohana (family), they can not be ‘right’ with the individual. It is an important reminder that ‘clearing the air’ in all of our relationships allows us to come back into alignment with our true self.

This concept extends to our our lineage / our ancestry. We inherit physical traits and patterns and we inherit energetical and emotional patterns. Often these patterns do not serve us and we can use techniques rooted in the practice of ho'oponopono to offer healing and forgiveness back through our lineage and 'set things right'.

Joe Vitale, in his wonderful book Zero Limits, describes an updated system of ho’oponopono originally taught by Kahuna Lapa’au, Mornah Nalamaku Simeona who was honored as a living treasure of Hawaii

Mr. Vitale and his co-author Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len explain that in this system, anything that occurs in your life, anything at all, is an opportunity to clear - to clean house. Essentially this means any problems you have, anything you are triggered by, presents an opportunity to clear. As Joe Vitale says, “It is not your fault, but it is your responsibility.”

In the book, they offer a simple phrase for clearing,

“I’m sorry. Please forgive me. I love you. Thank you.”

This simple and brilliant tool invites humility, grace, and love. The phrase can be spoken silently to your own tender, child self or it can be spoken to the Divine, God or whomever you believe in.

“CLEAN, erase, erase and find your own Shangri-La. Where? Within yourself.”
Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona, Kahuna Lapa’au

Pali Jae Lee outlines the history and practice of ho'oponopono in her book
HO'OPONOPONO The Hawaiian Way to Put Things Back into Balance.

In our ho'oponopono classes we use experiential exercises to bring awareness to unconscious patterns that live within us. These unconscious thoughts and emotions attract life experiences that echo our ancestor's experiences. By clearing and cleaning-house, we release patterning that is not in alignment with our highest truth and thus forever shift the trajectory of our lives.

Ultimately is all about peacemaking with ourselves, our ancestry and all of our relations.

"I forgive you
Please forgive me
Let us learn to forgive ourselves"
